Dr. Taras (Terry) Obal, Maxxam’s Director, Scientific Services and Development, was pleased to present the 14th Annual Maxxam Award to Dr. Jim Luong on Wednesday night at the CIC and CSC2013 Awards Banquet. Dr. Luong is the Associate Technology Director of the Analytical Technology Center at Dow Chemical Canada ULC in Calgary, Alberta.
In his 32 year career at Dow Chemical, Dr. Luong’s key areas of research include ultra-trace analysis, multi-dimensional gas chromatography, and differential ion mobility spectrometry. He has continued to provide global leadership in gas chromatography technology developments and we are delighted to see Jim’s achievements honoured in this way.”
The Maxxam Award is presented annually to a scientist who has made a distinguished contribution to the field of analytical chemistry while working in Canada; it is presented each year as part of the Canadian Chemistry Conference & Exhibition – hosted by the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) and the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC). The award is available to candidates from government, industry and academia, on a rotating basis. The selection committee includes the CSC Director of Awards, the past two winners of the Maxxam Award and the Chair of the Analytical Chemistry division of the CSC.
Maxxam also sponsored the opening night reception for CSC2013, welcoming over 2000 scientists to Quebec City. During the conference, Dr. Obal gave a presentation titled: “Research Partnerships with Private Industry: The Path of Collaboration” as part of the Environmental Chemistry R&D Award session.
