Maxxam seeks to inspire next generation of chemistry graduates

February 21, 2013 – Toronto, ON. In a move that will promote scientific excellence and innovation in Canada, Maxxam Analytics today announced the signing of a three-year, multi-faceted sponsorship agreement with the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC).

“This sponsorship reinforces Maxxam’s core commitments to scientific leadership, innovation and collaboration. I am pleased to be elevating our involvement with the CIC with this new agreement,” says Jon Hantho, President and CEO. “We are delighted to collaborate with the leading industry association as they seek to inspire and educate the next generation of chemists, chemical engineers and chemical technologists.”
Roland Andersson, CIC’s Executive Director states: “We are thrilled that Maxxam is the first company to make such a significant, multi-year commitment to support the work of our association. This stable funding model helps strengthen our continuing education events and online resources for our members. It also helps develop momentum for our outreach activities, which are designed to inspire young people to pursue a career in chemistry.”

Maxxam’s sponsorship provides gold or silver-level funding support for four annual events organized by the CIC for chemistry students and professional members of the association seeking to stay on the leading edge of developments in the chemistry profession. It also allows for expanded online training opportunities by distributing specialized Maxxam material through CIC’s Live Learning Centre. Maxxam’s sponsorship includes gold level support for CIC’s outreach efforts which include National Chemistry Week and classroom visits to conduct “The Canadian Water Experiment”, an initiative that aims to help students explore earth’s most critical resource, while teaching important fundamentals and applications of chemistry in water.

Maxxam has been involved with the CIC as an award sponsor since 2000. The Maxxam Award is presented annually to a scientist residing in Canada who has made a distinguished contribution to the field of analytical chemistry. In 2011, Maxxam was also a Gold Sponsor of the International Year of Chemistry and in 2012, the company was a Patron Sponsor of the CSC Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition.

Maxxam’s scientific experts speak regularly at CIC events. Most recently, Phil Heaton, General Manager, Oil Sands and Upgrading, delivered a well-received technical presentation “The Chemistry and Character of Athabasca Bitumen and its Products” at CSC 2012 in Calgary.
