Welcome to Maxxam’s resource centre for Shellfish testing. On this page you will find the information needed to submit your samples to Maxxam for testing in accordance with the Canadian Food Inspection’s guidelines.


If you are not currently a client of Maxxam’s, please complete the New Client Set-up Form and email to CourtenayCustomerService@maxxam.ca.

COC forms must be completed and submitted each time a samples are delivered to the laboratory.

Tip! To save time, download the electronic form and create templates with your company’s information, typical sample ID’s and testing requirements. The templates can then be printed out and completed manually or be completed electronically before printing.


As a new Maxxam client you have the option of establishing credit, or utilizing a credit card for payment. Please select the appropriate link to ensure rapid processing of your samples.

As an existing Maxxam client, your credit is already established. Should you have any questions on this, please contact your Customer Service Representative. If you are uncertain of who this is, please forward your inquiries to CourtenayCustomerService@maxxam.ca.


Shellstock samples should be collected in clean, waterproof and puncture resistant containers. Approximately 10-12 or more animals (sufficient to yield 150-250 g), free of open or cracked shells are required for each shellstock sample. Shellstock samples should be kept and transported in dry storage at 10°C or below but above 0°C until examined. Shellstock should not be allowed to come in direct contact with ice. Shellstock samples should be submitted to the laboratory as quickly as possible and analyzed within 24 hours of collection.

When submitting samples for Vibrio parahaemolyticus testing samples must arrive at the laboratory between 4-10 C

Any samples submitted to Maxxam’s Courtenay location by 1pm will be delivered by plane free of charge to the Burnaby Laboratory for same day processing.
