Maxxam is the leading private DNA testing laboratory in Canada. We provide DNA analysis for governments, police agencies, private investigators, corporations, professionals and individual consumers. Maxxam’s goal has been to make expert forensic biology and DNA testing available quickly and efficiently. We provide information that our clients seek when they are making decisions about issues that are often complicated and very personal. What is DNA Testing? DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic blueprint that determines the biological characteristics of the person or animal being tested. Call it DNA Profiling, Genetic Fingerprinting or just plain DNA Testing – it is an accurate and powerful technology for determination of identity. While the most publicized application of this technology has been in the forensic identification of those accused of crimes, it is similarly powerful in its ability to define genetic relationships. Dr. Wayne Murray, Maxxam’s Director of Forensic and DNA services and former head of the DNA Unit at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto, is one of Canada’s most experienced DNA experts. He has testified more than 70 times as an expert witness in forensic cases involving DNA evidence, has delivered over 40 lectures or courses and is co-author of “The DNA Handbook” (ISBN 9780433456360) Maxxam’s laboratory manager, Technical Leader and scientists have greater than 100 cumulative years of experience in biology/DNA casework analysis.
Accredited Testing and Legally Defensible Results
DNA testing services are not regulated in Canada. Voluntary accreditation is one way for a laboratory to demonstrate that they have quality measures in place, and staff with the necessary education and training requirements to perform DNA testing properly. On January 31, 2000, Maxxam was the first laboratory in Canada to be accredited under the forensic testing guidelines of the Standards Council of Canada (SCC). Choosing an accredited laboratory and following legal protocols such as identity verification and ‘chain of custody’ documentation is the best way for clients to obtain results that are legally defensible. In-home (non-legal) DNA sample collection kits are also available for consumers who wish to obtain quality results for human relatedness testing that don’t involve Maxxam’s legally defensible protocols. For confidential online access to paternity and immigration testing, individual consumers are invited to visit: thednalab.com, a division of Maxxam Analytics.
Other Applications of DNA Testing
Maxxam offers a variety of additional DNA services that include Food Traceability, Meat Speciation, Genetic Research, DNA purification and Genotyping. For example, food traceability services provided at Maxxam contribute to quality control programs that help regulatory agencies identify risks to public health and ensure the quality of meat products provided to consumers.
