Drug Screening for Horse Racing, Shows and Pulling Events
Maxxam’s forensic equine drug testing (FEDT) services are provided to regulatory agencies responsible for administration of drug control programs. The Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency is Canada’s federal body responsible for supervision of pari-mutuel betting at racetracks and we are the Agency’s official laboratory facility.
Maxxam also provides comprehensive drug screening services to horse show associations across Canada such as Equine Canada, Calgary Stampede, and various Horse Pulling Associations. Testing protocols can be adjusted to meet specific regulations for each event.
Each urine and blood sample received by the laboratory is screened for the presence of a large number of drugs and/or metabolites that may enhance performance or otherwise contravene applicable regulations.
Samples that are determined to have potential positive results using the initial screening methodology are then re-analysed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry or gas chromatography mass spectrometry to unequivocally confirm the presence and identity of the detected substance(s), providing our clients with legally defensible data.
Maxxam also performs split sample/referee sample testing for other jurisdictions (nationally or internationally). Our FEDT department uses state-of-the-art technology such as:
- Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS); ESI and APCI ionisation modes
- QTRAP mass spectrometry
- Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS)
- Enzyme-linked Immunoassay (ELISA)
- High Performance Liquid Chromatography, with fluorescence and ultraviolet detectors
