Understanding Thermal Water Chemistry
Maxxam has designed a purpose-built analytical solution to address the significant problems of corrosion, deposits and scale in steam generators. A survey of Oil Sands Leadership Initiative (OSLI) members found that fouling and water treating problems believed to be associated with dissolved inorganic and organic material are common to all operators. Maxxam partnered with OSLI to undertake a comprehensive research project to develop best practices and practical solutions to address this issue.
By researching the chemistry of thermally-produced water, we have developed an indepth understanding of migration patterns and the fate of the inorganics and organics in thermal water systems.
Maxxam’s Thermal Water Analysis Program will provide operators the data they need to optimize their boiler throughput and improve ROI. This sampling and analysis program can also help to:
- Reduce the risk of a shut-down
- Avoid unnecessary loss of production, and
- Optimize spending on water treatment and silica removal
The first step of this program is a baseline evaluation of the thermal water chemistry in select parameters, followed by a monthly or quarterly sampling and analysis depending on the outcome of the initial assessment. The sampling points will vary depending on plant configuration, but will generally be at these stages:
De-Oiled Produced Water
- Boiler Feed Water
- OTSG Boiler Blowdown
- LP Separator Flash Blowdown
With the analytical data, customers can take corrective measures to increase production efficiency.
